Roundup for games played on Sept. 7

Hinsdale Central 5, Proviso West 0: The Red Devils (5-1) got a pair of goals and an assist from Mike Krohn, two goals from Gareth Parsons, and a goal from Mitch Reavis in a 5-0 win over the Panthers. Hinsdale Central also got assists from Aaron Cheever, Leondro Perez, Michael Hrisstov, and Steve Gianakas in winning its first West Suburban Conference, Silver Division contest. Coach Mike Wiggins' team heads to Peoria this weekend to take on Wisconsin state power Marquette and perennial Illinois Class 2A state power Peoria Notre Dame.

"We've got some momentum going in against a couple of very good teams," Wiggins said. "Marquette will spread things out in a 4-4-2 and they're going to be hard defensively, and very organized as a group. They'll possess the ball very well and that will be a great test for us on Friday night. Then on Saturday night we'll play a Peoria Notre Dame team with a couple of frontrunners that are going to be playing at a Division I school. (The Irish) will be very good on the ball, very skillful, and we'll be tested on a very big field. We'll have to stay organized defensively."

Elk Grove 3, Schaumburg 0: Justin Gavros, Cesar Rodriguez, and Carlos Cisneros each scored in a Mid Suburban League contest in Schaumburg, lifting the Grenadiers' record to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. After a scoreless first half, Cisneros buried a 25-yard free kick to get the ball rolling for Elk Grove, after a red card left the Saxons playing down a man the rest of the way. "We were able to knock the ball around and we kind of wore them down," said Elk Grove coach Joe Bush, who also liked what he saw from defenders Mike Ginter, Matt Ginter, and Rafal Borys on Tuesday. "Mike Ginter was a little banged up, but with him back it allows us to push Trevor (Cwiok) up to the center mid, which gives us more in the attack."

"We also got in the box today and that's somethihng we worked on all week. I told the guys that if forwards were tougher in the box, they would have been defenders. You've got to want it in there and make the defense physically take the ball away from you. We did a little bit more of that tonight and hopefully we'll continue on."

Lyons Township 4, Oswego 0: Opening-round play of the Pepsi Showdown saw the Lions get goals from Horacio Sanchez, Brett Heimerdinger, Elliot Borge, and David Ellis in LaGrange. Sanchez and Kyle Kurfirst each had a pair of assists as LT upped its season record to 4-0-2.
